Pac-10 reprimands USC coach Bibby

Los Angeles — The Pac-10 Conference publicly reprimanded Southern California coach Henry Bibby for comments about the officiating in the Trojans’ losses to California and Stanford last weekend.

Bibby also was placed on probation for the rest of the season Monday.

“Conference rules prohibit public comments about officiating of the nature Coach Bibby made,” Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said.

Bibby has complained about the officiating after each of USC’s last three losses, to Arizona, California and Stanford.

After the Trojans lost at Stanford, Bibby was upset the Cardinal outshot USC 25-4 from the free-throw line in the second half and won despite making only three field goals over the final 11 minutes.

New Mexico guard remains hospitalized

Albuquerque, N.M. — New Mexico senior point guard Senque Carey will remain hospitalized longer than expected following surgery for a spinal cord injury that had left his legs paralyzed for two weeks.

“He’s in good condition, but he’s not recovering as quickly as they initially hoped,” said Ruthann Richter, Stanford University Medical Center’s director of media relations.

Carey did not go home Tuesday as doctors had initially predicted.

Surgeons removed a bulging disc in Carey’s upper spine and fused the spine in that area, said Dr. Lawrence Shuer, professor of neurosurgery at the Palo Alto, Calif., hospital.
