Mary Diane Finley, 32, Lawrence, died from injuries she suffered when she fell from a horse.

Only the worsening plight of the Kansas farmer marred an otherwise optimistic picture of the state’s economy, Gov. Robert Bennett told business leaders gathered at Kansas University.

Total personal income in Douglas County increased about 16 percent from 1975 to 1976, overcoming a slight decline in farm income, according to Gov. Bennett’s annual economic report. The county unemployment figure (3.5 percent) was even lower than the state’s enviable 3.8 percent, Bennett added.

From the Lawrence Daily World of Jan. 28, 1903: “Mr. Martin, the taxidermist on the Hill (KU), has received a very flattering offer from Yale University. Mr. Martin is well-known in the east as being connected with the Kansas Natural History Collection. He was asked to do some special mounting for Yale but was not at service to accept. … There was no chapel exercise at the university today and there will be none tomorrow. This is on account of the examinations which are now being held. The semester ends tomorrow.”
