IN 1978

Former presidential economic adviser Herbert Stein was to be keynote speaker at the 1978 Kansas Economic Outlook conference at Kansas University on Jan. 27. Stein had served both the Nixon and Ford administrations in Washington.

The City Commission decided to tighten the controls on funds from the community development program regarding housing rehabilitation projects.

Local and state officials disclosed that the construction of Clinton Parkway from Lawrence to Clinton Lake could cost $9.8 million, more than $3 million above the previous official estimate.

IN 1963

Beginning the coming September, most Kansas University undergraduate students were to pay fees totaling $119 a semester, up $15 from the current rate. The board of regents had approved the boost.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of Jan. 25, 1903: “W.E. Stone of Lecompton did not look natural today. His trousers legs were both outside his boots. Do you know how our John Lowman came to be lame? He was in the Johnstown flood and his family was killed at the time. …

“W.R. Williams makes money so fast he may have to get someone to help him count it. He sells dress patterns and the demand gets bigger and bigger. …

“W.H. Weeks of Michigan has not yet taken the university football coaching job. He asks more money than is at present in sight. The coach last year made such a dismal failure that the demand is for a new one this year. Mr. Weeks played with Michigan the past four years and has a record as a player that is hard to beat.”
