Ex-chief of Westar worth $31.7 million

? In his last year as Westar Energy Inc.’s top executive, the net worth of David Wittig’s family was nearly $31.7 million, according to a record filed in his federal criminal case.

Wittig and former Topeka banker Clinton O’Dell Weidner II each face seven felony charges in U.S. District Court, all related to accusations they hid the true purpose of a $1.5 million loan to Wittig from Capital City Bank, where Weidner was president.

Wittig’s attorneys filed documents last week that included a balance sheet for Witting and his wife, Beth, dated Jan. 8, 2002.

The balance sheet showed assets of $38 million, including $10.8 million in Westar stock, $5.5 million in a New York City apartment and $2.5 million in their Topeka home.

The balance sheet showed liabilities of $6.3 million, including $5.5 million owed to Capitol City Bank.

The charges against the two men are not related to Westar, the state’s largest electric company. In November, Wittig resigned as the firm’s chairman, president and chief executive officer, saying he wanted to concentrate on his defense.

His and Weidner’s attorneys are seeking the dismissal of the charges against them. A pretrial hearing before U.S. District Judge Sam Crow is scheduled for Feb. 27.
