A 75th birthday celebration for Marcie Turner, Linwood, will be from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Linwood Community Building, Third and Main streets. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

Carol and Greg Rau, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, William Ryne Rau, born Jan. 18, 2003, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

John and Jennifer Martello, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Marie Martello, born Dec. 31, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She has a brother, Alfonso Martello.

Jodie Bacon, Baldwin, was named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2002 semester at Sterling College by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average. Bacon is the daughter of Dennis and Shelley Bacon.

Jordan Ulrich, Baldwin, was named to the fall 2002 Dean’s Honor Roll at Fort Scott Community College by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Ben Jensen, Lawrence, is one of eight Sterling College students in Pusan, South Korea, in January as part of a “Share Your World” trip offered through the college. The group left Dec. 31 and will return Tuesday.

While in South Korea, Jensen is teaching English as a second language at the Mission Language School of Sooyoungro Presbyterian Church. The language school is a ministry of the church that trains its future missionaries while reaching out to Buddhists in the city.

The Sterling students are teaching three or four classes a day to students ranging in age from first-graders to adults. They are living with host families.

Throughout the fall semester, Jensen met once a week to prepare to teach ESL and to learn about the South Korean culture.

Derek Korte and Katherine Tharp, both of Lawrence, were named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2002 semester at the University of Minnesota by earning at least 3.67 grade-point average.

Erin Pipkin, Lawrence, made the Dean’s List during the fall 2002 semester at the University of Iowa by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Taylor Culley Buchanan, Lawrence, is the recipient of an academic scholarship from Cloud County Community College for the 2003-2004 school year. Taylor will be a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School. He is the son of Rex and Susan Buchanan. Taylor plans to major in computer security.

MidAmerica Nazarene University, Olathe, announces students who made honors during the fall 2002 semester. Sarah Mages, Tonganoxie, made the President’s List by receiving a 4.0 grade-point average. Those who made the Dean’s List by earning at least a 3.5 GPA were James Hanson, DeSoto; Amy Birdsell, Lawrence; Catherine Baker, Stilwell; and Amy Barnes, Tonganoxie. Billy Wyrick, Edgerton, made the Honor Roll by receiving at least a 3.2 GPA.

Miriam Grace Hillmer, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for the 2002 fall semester at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Kevin Dobski and Katie Heck, both of Lawrence, earned bachelor’s degrees in December 2002 at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas. Dobski earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations. Heck received a degree in nursing.

David Raney, Lawrence, received a bachelor of fine arts degree at Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo., in December 2002.
