DCABA Meeting: Members of the Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn. are encouraged to attend a kickoff meeting for the summer season at 6:30 tonight at Free State High.


  • Ex-Lion Honored: Lawrence native Tom Williams, now in his third year at Oklahoma University, has been named USA Track and Field collegiate pole vault coach of the year. At Lawrence High, Williams won the Kansas Class 6A vault in 1989. Williams coached at Nebraska University, his alma mater, for nine years before joining the OU staff in 2000.

  • Gymnast Shines: Caitlin Fisher of the Kansas School of Gymnastics won the vault and finished sixth in the all-around at Level 6 in last weekend's Diamond Jewell Invitational. At Level 4, Marianna Foster was fifth in all-around. Also competing were Brooke Leslie and Amber Weeks.

  • Chadwick Third-Team All-American: Williams College sophomore Joyia Chadwick, a Free State High product, has been named a third-team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Chadwick has led the Ephs to two straight NESCAC titles. She was the league's player of the year in 2002.

  • LGA Grants Available: Lawrence Gymnastics Academy has scholarships available for a 10-week instructional course. It's open to youths ages 15 and under who are taking part in free-lunch programs at their school. For information, call 865-0856.
  • Junior Wrestlers compete: Lawrence Junior Wrestling Club participated at the Bonner Springs Invitational on Jan. 12. First-place finishes were earned by Caleb D'Armond, Zechariah Warren, Ammon Austin, Caleb Gress, Zach Toelkes, and Robert Flaig. Second-place winners were Brianna Hayes, Misty Hayes and Jacob Warren. Devan Probst, Garret Girard, Macon Ezell, Dale Roussel, Austin Anderson, Harley Wilks and Emma Mercer each earned third-place finishes. Andy Jones and Dylan Housworth each finished in fourth place, and Robert Girard earned a fifth-place finish. The Juniors also wrestled in the Tonganoxie Invitational on Jan. 19, where Jones, Zechariah Warren and Garret Girard took first place. Diamond Brockley, Brett Anderson, Jordan Jump, Probst, D'Armond, Flaig and Ezell earned second-place finishes; Sean Tubbs, Callan Anderson and Housworth finished third and Summer Wilkes, Jacob Warren and Roussel finished fourth.


  • Coaches sought: The Holcom Baseball Assn. is seeking coaches for the upcoming season. For information, contact Brent Urban at 830-0626 or stop by Holcom Park Recreation Center for an application.

  • Soccer registration: Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. of Lawrence is accepting registrations for the Spring 2003 season. Forms available at Checkers, 2300 Louisiana; the KVSA office, 2518 Ridge Court; and Holcom Park Recreation Center. Deadline is Feb. 1.
