Cost of care

To the editor:

Universal health care has brought about much discussion and interest. A national system of health care has been proposed. Because of rising costs for medical services and prescription drugs, health care and insurance are two of the most expensive financial concerns for older adults. There are far too many citizens in our community/nation who are faced with the decision of either taking their medications or eating.

The Lawrence/Douglas County Advocacy Council on Aging encourages people of all ages to gather information on this issue. Locally, Kansas Health Care for All was formed to promote passage of a national health care system. This group will meet next at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the auditorium of the Lawrence Public Library.

The advocacy council does not currently endorse the idea of a national health care system but realizes that dire economic times make other options worth investigating.
