Shirar services

Services for James Lester Shirar, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 1 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. He donated his body to the Kansas University Medical Center.

Mr. Shirar died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at his daughter’s home in Lawrence.

He was born Jan. 25, 1912, in Lawrence, the son of Charles Levi and Alice Evelyn (Cooper) Shirar. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence and attended Liberty Memorial High School.

Mr. Shirar was a farmer, a custodian at Grant School and Lawrence High School, and a basket weaver. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

He married Catherine May Luckan on Aug. 18, 1950, in Lawrence. She died May 24, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Shirar, Lawrence; a son, Jerry, Hanover Park, Ill.; a sister, Helen Miller, Joplin, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the church or Hospice Care of Douglas County, sent in care of the funeral home.
