Second ‘Idol’ delays airing of superior ’24’

“American Idol” (7 p.m., Fox) returns for a second season with a 90-minute premiere, followed by “American Idol Revisited” (8:30 p.m.), a half-hour glance back at last summer’s show. “Idol” hasn’t even begun, but I’m sick of it already.

To make matters worse, Fox’s “Idol” over-programming means that “24” will not return to the schedule until February 4. This is madness.

If Fox doesn’t appreciate “24,” the show certainly has its fans. “24” creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran were recently named winners of the fourth annual Rave Awards sponsored by Wired magazine. According to the Rave folks, these are “the people who are changing your mind.” I wish Fox would change its mind and program “24” with more regularity.

Call me crazy, but watching “InStyle: Celebrity Weddings” (7 p.m., NBC) left me with a feeling of deep sadness. OK, it isn’t as pathetic as watching “Just Shoot Me” enter its creative deathwatch. I just felt rather sorry for the fabulous celebrities on display. For all of their borrowed jewels and Vera Wang gowns, they seemed like a pitiable lot who have turned a private, precious moment into a rather glitzy home movie.

This being an “InStyle” production, the focus is almost entirely on name-dropping and product placement. We hear from dozens of designers, caterers, florists and wedding planners. Rarely do we hear anything about the bride or groom’s families (Shannon Elizabeth and Sharon Lawrence are notable and touching exceptions). It’s odd that we learn how Jessica Simpson saved herself for her wedding night, but we never meet her folks; or that we know who designed her gazillion karat ring, but never learn her father’s name. Call me old-fashioned, but that’s just sad.
