Douglas services

Services for Robert E. Douglas, 87, Lawrence, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Douglas died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Oklahoma City, the son of Eli and Zina (Peale) Douglas.

Mr. Douglas lived in Oklahoma City for five years before moving to northern Oklahoma, then, at age 8, to Emporia. He graduated from high school in Emporia and attended Kansas University for one year. He was a veteran of World War II.

He was a meteorological technician for the U.S. Weather Service. He helped establish the weather station at Phillip Billard Airport in Topeka and retired in 1974.

Mr. Douglas was a member of Tecumseh United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 1 in Topeka, and the Eagles Lodge in Lawrence.

He married Velma May Snow on April 10, 1943. She died May 31, 1994.

Survivors include two sisters, Marguerite Erdman, Port Orchard, Wash., and Mary Lou Lassey, North Booneville, Wash.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will greet them after Monday’s service.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.
