EMU Theater to stage play by local writer

EMU Theater will present a staged reading of Lawrence-based playwright Dan Born’s “V Henry K” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The play takes a serio-comic look at power politics. Penny Rose, the ambitious new district attorney of Rollison, Iowa, tries to bring an ex-statesman, Henry K, to justice for his connection to a crime committed 30 years ago — the murder of a Chilean journalist who was Rose’s father. Tom Brixton, a sharp-witted local media personality, falls in love with Rose and assists her. Ng, a Cambodian-American new to the DA’s office, brings a mix of hard work and Buddhist spirituality to Rose and the play.

Cast members include Linda Gaumnitz, Kerry Magee, Kevin Lu, Alfred Lata and Honey Hallock. James Benkard is directing.

The performance is free and open to the public.

KU faculty musicians in Brown Bag series

Two Kansas University faculty musicians will open the spring season of the Brown Bag Classics series.

John Boulton, professor of flute, and Kip Haaheim, assistant professor of music theory and composition, will perform the Wednesday lunch concerts on Wednesday and Jan. 29 at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

Boulton has performed with the Kansas City Philharmonic, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, Lawrence Chamber Players and the Early Music Consort of Kansas City, among others.

Haaheim’s compositions, installations and film scores have received acclaim at the Kansas City International Festival of Electro-acoustic Music and the Arizona International Film Festival. He recently released a new music DVD on the Summit Records label.

The performances are free and open to the public.
