Priest gets probation in sexual abuse case

A former Catholic priest, who is already serving prison time for sexually abusing a teen-age boy in Lawrence, was sentenced Friday on similar charges in Nemaha County.
A judge ordered Dennis Schmitz to be placed on probation for two years.

The probation period won’t start until Schmitz is finished serving nearly three years in prison on the Douglas County conviction.
Schmitz was also ordered to undergo counseling.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent solicitation of a child Dec. 13 in Nemaha County. The victim in both cases was the same — a boy who was 15 at the time the sexual abuse occurred.
Schmitz was sentenced in October 2002 to 32 months in prison by Douglas County District Judge Mike Malone for taking indecent liberties with a child in the fall of 1998.
