Burglaries and thefts reported

• A 35-year-old Lawrence man told police he lost $1,840 when someone took four of his checks and forged them between Dec. 31 and Jan. 3. According to a police report, two of the alleged forgeries happened at Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd St., and two happened at 3000 W. Sixth St., where there is a Dillons and a Commerce Bank branch.
• Another forgery case involves a thief or thieves who appear to be fond of tobacco, liquor and ice cream. A 56-year-old retiree told police someone took nine of her checks and used them to rack up about $705 in purchases from Dec. 16-19. The thief apparently made two stops at local Dairy Queens, spending $15.59 at 1835 Mass. and $19.45 two days later at 2545 Iowa. The thief also spent $62.60 at Wehner’s Discount Liquor, 945 E. 23rd St., $63 at Myers Retail Liquor, 902 W. 23rd St., and $64.57 at Smoker Friendly, a tobacco outlet at 3010 Iowa. More of the woman’s forged checks turned up at Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa; Kohl’s, 3240 Iowa; and Old Navy, 3240 Iowa.
• Sometime between Jan. 3 and Thursday, a burglar took $7,385 worth of tools, electronics and other equipment from the home of a 54-year-old KU facilities-operations employee, the man told police. The burglar took equipment including two VCRs, a cordless drill, saw and sander, 200 CDs and a DVD player from the home in the 2200 block of Harper Street, according to a police report.
