Lawrence school board

Final approval expected for Riverside closure

Bottom Line

The board is expected to give final approval for school boundary changes that permit closure of Riverside School, 601 N. Iowa.

In December, the board voted 6-1 to move ahead with plans to shut down the elementary school, which has 120 students and is the district’s smallest.

Background

Unless the board reverses itself, Riverside’s doors will be closed in May.

Riverside’s students would be divided between Deerfield and Pinckney schools. Students living north of Interstate 70 would be assigned to Deerfield, while those south of the turnpike would go to Pinckney.

Other business

The agenda:

  • Convene an executive session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss a disciplinary action taken against a student; teacher contract negotiations and meet with the district’s attorney.
  • About 7:15 p.m., open the meeting by issuing a decision on a student’s appeal of a suspension.
  • Receive comments from Scott Morgan, board president; Randy Weseman, superintendent; and board members.
  • Consider a one-year contract with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Mid-America to be the exclusive soft-drink supplier at Lawrence High School.
  • Consider a request from Landplan Engineering, 1310 Wakarusa Drive, for easements north and west of Free State High School to run utilities that would serve new developments.
  • Receive a financial audit from Lowenthal, Singleton, Webb and Wilson for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2002.
  • Second reading on board policies about the school year length, student truancy, copyright and duplication practices, staff expense reimbursements, student transfers and student do-not-resuscitate orders.
