Wizards’ Jordan earns player of week honor

New York — Michael Jordan was honored as the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday after scoring a season-high 41 points against Indiana. Jordan, who will be 40 next month, won the award for the first time since April 6, 1998. It was the 24th time he has won the award in his career, more than any other player.

For the week, Jordan averaged 22.3 points, 8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.25 steals as the Wizards won three of four games.

Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks won the award in the Western Conference. He averaged 29.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.33 blocks and 1.33 steals for the week as Dallas went 2-1.

Wilkens’ job safe despite Raptors’ struggles

Auburn Hills, Mich. — Raptors general manager Glen Grunwald said Monday that coach Lenny Wilkens’ job is safe.

Reports speculated Wilkens could be on his way out because the Raptors have struggled this season. They are 8-27 and have lost 11 straight after Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Pistons.

“It’s not something we’re contemplating,” Grunwald said.

Wilkens has won and coached more games than anyone in NBA history.

Celtics fill roster spot with ex-Husker Moore

Boston — The Boston Celtics signed 7-footer Mikki Moore, a former Nebraska Cornhusker, to a 10-day contract Monday, filling a final roster spot that had been empty all season.

The 27-year-old center was averaging 15.0 points and 7.9 rebounds with the Roanoke Dazzle of the National Basketball Development League. He averaged 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 142 games with the Detroit Pistons between 1998 and 2002.

Wolves activate Wally

Minneapolis — Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Wally Szczerbiak was activated from the injured list Monday after participating in his first full-contact practice in three months. To make room for Szczerbiak — who’s missed all but four games this season because of a sprained little toe on his left foot — the Wolves waived reserve forward Reggie Slater. Szczerbiak dislocated the toe on Oct. 8 in a preseason game against Milwaukee, returned a month later but went back to the bench on Nov. 19.

Rebraca placed on IR

Auburn Hills, Mich. — The Detroit Pistons placed center Zeljko Rebraca on the injured list Monday because of an irregular heartbeat, and activated point guard Pepe Sanchez.
