State budget: Education officials plan funding discussion

Lawrence’s public school superintendent and a Kansas University faculty member tonight will put a local face on state and national education financing issues.

Supt. Randy Weseman and Bruce Baker, associate professor of education, will speak on “School Funding and Mandates: The Lawrence Response” at 7 p.m. at Free State High School’s Black Box Theater, 4700 Overland Drive. It’s open to the public.

The state is experiencing severe budget problems at a time when federal officials place new demands on public schools to improve academic performance under the “No Child Left Behind” legislation.

Weseman and Baker also will respond to questions at the forum sponsored by the Lawrence Business/Education Partnership.

Accident: ATV victim identified

A man who died in a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle accident Sunday was identified Monday by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was Daniel E. Miller, 29, Gardner.

Miller was driving the Kawasaki 650 V-Twin ATV up an incline when the vehicle overturned, Lt. Kathy Tate said. The accident occurred on private property near U.S. Highway 59 and North 700 Road.

Legislation: Lawmakers plan hearing for area organizations

The Douglas County legislative delegation wants to hear from area organizations on what they want during the upcoming legislative session.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers will have a hearing from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence High School, 19th and Louisiana streets.

The legislative session convenes Monday.

Employment: KU plans job fair

Kansas University students wanting part-time jobs can attend a job fair Jan. 22 at the Kansas Union.

Eighteen employers, both KU departments and off-campus companies, will attend the fair, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the union’s fourth-floor lobby.

The fair is sponsored by KU’s Student Employment Services, which is part of University Career and Employment Services. Job vacancies also are listed at www.ku.edu/~uces.
