Notebook: Hinrich torches ‘Roos for 29 points

Kansas senior guard Kirk Hinrich scored a career-high 29 points off a career-best seven three-pointers in the Jayhawks’ 100-46 rout of UMKC on Saturday at Kemper Arena.

He tied a career high with 10 baskets against just two misses.

“I mean, I was getting wide-open,” Hinrich said. “I was just shooting with confidence and making ’em. I hit my first two, which always helps. That extra confidence comes into play.”

Nash sinks threes: Junior Bryant Nash made two three-point goals, his first of the season. The 6-foot-6 junior had missed his first 12 three-point attempts after making two of three in the preseason.

That’s believed to be the longest streak of unsuccessful three-point attempts by a Jayhawk since John Crider went 0-for-12 from beyond the arc during the 1999-2000 season.

“I’ve got to start knocking down shots,” Nash said. “I need to shoot it with more confidence.”

KU coach Roy Williams was miffed Nash hesitated on his first three-point try.

“I tried at one of the timeouts … I tried at halftime to make him so mad at me he’d quit thinking about his shot and just shoot the ball,” Williams said of the sometimes-reluctant Nash, who hit two of four threes and two of six shots overall, good for six points.

“I can’t jump in anybody’s brain. You’ve got to shoot the sucker. If you shoot the sucker, you have got to feel you are going to make it. If not, don’t shoot the sucker. Kirk one time has a wide-open shot; Bryant was wide-open so he passed it to him. I told Bryant it didn’t look like he thought he was going to make it. I was pleased the way he bounced back the second half.”

Nash, who suffered a nondisplaced nose fracture on Thursday against UNC Asheville, said he would not wear a mask during games.

“It hurts a little bit. It’s a little bit swollen,” he said. “There’s nothing we can do. They’ve given me some nasal spray to use, that’s about it.”

Standing O: Williams was elated the crowd of 13,433 gave Wayne Simien a standing ovation when the power forward returned from the locker room with his arm in a sling with 7:31 to play.

“I’m glad he was able to come back to the bench and have the people show how much they care,” Williams said. “If it’d been in the fieldhouse it might have been the loudest I’ve heard in my life. I told Wayne’s dad rehab would probably be a lot quicker than the first time because then he just had Leavenworth High School people praying for him, now he has the whole Kansas nation.”

More on shoulder: Dr. Larry Magee put Simien’s shoulder back in place in the locker room shortly after the shoulder was dislodged.

Trainer Mark Cairns explained that it could take a week or so for any decisions to be made regarding rehab or possible surgery.

“We just don’t know how it will react. It’s too early to tell,” Cairns said.

Stats, facts: Keith Langford’s 10 rebounds tied a career high. He had 18 points off 8-of-13 shooting. … KU’s rebound margin of plus-37 ranks second in the Williams era and is largest since KU outrebounded Colorado by 43 (72-29) in 1994.
