Facets of Japan revealed in Spencer photo show

An exhibition of 85 mostly black-and-white photographs will open Saturday in the South Balcony Gallery of the Spencer Museum of Art.

“Hidden Japan” contains the work of Kijuro Yahagi, who was born in 1952 in Yamagata, Japan. He traveled nearly 20,000 kilometers throughout the country during all seasons to capture the images in the exhibition.

The photographs range from geological features to architecture, both ancient and modern, to crowded cityscapes. They show both natural wonders, technological marvels and the human imprint.

Comments from the photographer alongside each shot give context or historical background on the image.

The photography display is organized and circulated by the Japan Foundation.

Youmi Efurd, the museum’s intern in Asian art, will give the lunchtime Tour du Jour of the show at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 6. The photography will remain on display through Feb. 16.

Arts Commission awards Arts in Education Grants

The Lawrence Arts Center and the Ottawa Community Arts Council are among seven organizations in Kansas that have received a grant from the state’s Arts in Early Education Program.

The $7,500 grants are administered by the Kansas Arts Commission and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Each of the organizations had to provide a dollar-for-dollar value match to the grant and was expected to hire at least one artist to work directly with children, teachers, staff and parents of enrolled children.

The goal of the Kansas AEEP statewide is to use the arts as a primary learning medium to achieve optimum child development.

Other grants went to early arts education programs in Dodge City, McPherson, Wichita, Hugoton and Overland Park.
