Xavier guard Chalmers out
Cincinnati ? Lionel Chalmers had surgery on his broken right foot Wednesday and will be sidelined for about a month, leaving No. 19 Xavier without its most experienced guard and floor leader. Chalmers, a senior guard, hurt his foot four minutes into Xavier’s 75-73 victory Tuesday night over No. 15 Creighton.
He underwent tests Wednesday and doctors inserted a screw into the broken bone to speed healing. He will have therapy and wear a protective boot for two or three weeks.
Lionel should be able to return in about four weeks, Dr. Robert Burger said.
Xavier (9-2) plays at No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, its second game against a Top 25 team in five days.
Chalmers’ backup, sophomore Keith Jackson, scored a career-high 17 points, and David West had a season-high 28 points in the victory over Creighton.
Chalmers, also a senior, has started the last 43 games. He’s averaging 13.8 points, third on the team.
