Community activity

Want to participate in the community? Get out and vote.

Everyone’s busy. Many Lawrence residents may not think they have time to get involved in community activities. Attending meetings or volunteering on a regular basis is just too much.

So what can a busy resident do for the community? Something that doesn’t require a big time commitment?

Here’s the answer: Vote.

In today’s primary election, local voters will choose the candidates who will advance to the April 1 general election for Lawrence City Commission and school board. There are a variety of candidates and philosophies from which to choose. In just a few minutes, local residents can have a voice in who makes such vital decisions as where schools are located, what streets are improved, how the city will grow and how our children are educated.

This election is about us — about you — and you can be a part of it. Unlike candidates in national or even state elections, the people running for election today may be people you know. If you don’t know the candidates personally, you may know someone who knows them and can tell you more. If you want more information, you can spend a few minutes with the election guide in Sunday’s Journal-World or online at ljworld.com.

Then you can go to the polls and register an opinion. Don’t take for granted that you can wait and vote for the candidates you favor in the general election. They may not be on the ballot if you and other supporters don’t do your part today.

It’s important to the community — and to you. Take the time. Make a choice. Do something for the community.
