Seth Phillip Readinger, 17, son of Michael and Renee Readinger, was awarded Boy Scouting’s highest award of Eagle Scout during a ceremony Nov. 23 at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. He is a member of Troop 59.

For his Eagle project, he designed and directed landscaping and yard cleanup at the Haskell University LIGHT House.

Readinger began his scouting career in Cub Scout Pack 3052 at Broken Arrow School and joined Troop 59 in 1996. He has served as chaplain aide, librarian, patrol quartermaster, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and Order of the Arrow troop representative. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a Brave in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

He has earned 26 merit badges, the 50 Miler Award, Snorkeling BSA and the 100 Night Camping Award.

Readinger has attended Camp Naish and Camp Bartle. He has participated in high adventure trips to Colorado, Florida Sea Base Out Island and Philmont Scout Ranch.

He is a senior at Lawrence High School, where he is a member of the orchestra, Future Farmers of America and National Honor Society. He also has participated in the Eutin, Germany/Lawrence sister city student exchange program.

Nineteen scouts and seven adult leaders from Troop 55, chartered to the Westside Presbyterian Church, participated in a “Survival Camp” Feb. 8-9 at Camp Bromelsick. As part of the event, no tents or cooking gear were taken into the woods. Scouts were required to build their own shelter. Joe Wilson was the adult leader in charge of the outing.

Cub Scout Pack 3051, chartered to Pinckney School, had its annual Blue & Gold Banquet Feb. 15 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The highlight of the evening was the Arrow of Light ceremony. The following Scouts earned their Arrow of Light award: Aurelius Armstrong, Jake Brown, Rich DiBenedetto, Tyler Gibson, Austin Holladay and Asher O’Connor. The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting and the emblem can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. Austin Holladay, Tyler Gibson, Rich DiBenedetto and Jake Brown also earned the “All 20” patch. Austin Holladay, Rich DiBenedetto, Asher O’Connor, Jake Brown and Aurelius Armstrong joined Troop 52, while Tyler Gibson joined Troop 61. Other scouts who were present were Austin Garner, Grant Stone, Diamond Brockway, Jamie Braden, Johnathan Roberts, Spencer Wilson, Calvin Abbott, Abe Sampson, Willy Gibson and Dylan Sauer. Guests of the troops included Mike McCurdy, Ralena McCurdy and Mason McCurdy of Troop 52, Mike O’Connor of Troop 61, Sherry Tamerius and Kathy King of Pinckney School. Kip Grosshans and Ken Baldwin made a presentation about the Friends of Scouting program.

Members from Pack 3051 took part in the Scout Sunday program at Centennial United Methodist Church on Feb. 16. Cubs who participated were Dakota Zinn, Willy Gibson, Tyler Gibson, Justin Stearns, Rich DiBenedetto and Austin Holladay. They were accompanied by Harold Aiken, cub master; and Lisa DiBenedetto, Lisa Stice and Rod Zinn, adult leaders. Justin Deaver of Troop 52 also attended.

Venturing Crew 2055, chartered to the Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, recently elected new officers. Crew 2055 is a coed Venturing Crew dedicated to high adventure and is the oldest crew in the Pelathe District. It was chartered in 1996 as an Explorer Post. Crew officers are Samantha Meyer, president; Megan Heacock, first vice president; and Jeff Hornberger, second vice president. The new crew adviser is Tim Cosgrove. The members are training to participate in the KANIK Winter Camping program in March at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They also are planning a back-packing trip in June to Olympic National Park in Washington.
