KU greeks lend hand with Girl Scout cookies

With the help of Kansas University sororities and fraternities, more than 6,000 cases of Girl Scout cookies were picked up for delivery Tuesday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Elections: Meet the candidates series begins today

As part of our election coverage, the Journal-World today begins its “Meet the candidates” series.

Lawrence schools: Fifth-grader suspended after incident with knife

A student at Prairie Park School was suspended Tuesday for allegedly wielding a knife in a threatening manner at school.

The fifth-grade boy was kicked out of school for three-and-a-half days, said Julie Boyle, the district’s director of communications.

She said there were no injuries at the school, 2711 Kensington Road.

Lawrence Police were notified.

David Williams, the principal of Prairie Park, was to send parents a letter about the incident.

Trafficway plans: Corps adds two weeks to SLT comment period

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is clearing the way for more questions, comments and criticisms of plans to complete the South Lawrence Trafficway.

March 3 is the federal government’s new deadline for accepting public comments regarding the embattled project, which would drive a four-lane highway through the Baker Wetlands.

Monday had been the previous deadline, but officials decided to add two weeks after complaints that the 30-day comment period ended on Presidents Day, a federal holiday.

A new live Eagle Cam has been set up on ljworld.com that is pointed at a tree where eagles like to roost.

The tree is in Lawrence’s downtown, just outside a large window in the former riverfront mall on the south bank of the Kansas River.
