Kansas looks to avenge lone Big 12 loss

Undefeated in Big 12 Conference play last season, Kansas University’s men’s basketball team would be perfect so far this year if not for one team — Colorado.

The surprising Buffs (15-8 overall, 5-5 Big 12) — a team KU has owned during coach Roy Williams’ tenure — stunned the Jayhawks, 60-59, Jan. 22 at Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo., handing KU its only slip-up in the last 30 league games.

What frustrates the sixth-ranked Jayhawks (19-5, 9-1) is it was a winnable game. KU’s Michael Lee missed a jumper from the corner with three seconds left, then Kirk Hinrich missed a stickback at the buzzer — a play on which the Jayhawks thought Hinrich was fouled.

“We have in the back of our minds what happened at Colorado,” Lee said as the Jayhawks prepare for tonight’s 6:30 rematch at Allen Fieldhouse.

“It’s not necessarily revenge, but if our ultimate goal is to win the Big 12 title again, we have to win all our games.”

Against KU in Boulder, power forward Stephane Pelle scored 27 points and small forward Michel Morandais added 17, and center David Harrison piled up 11 rebounds.

The 6-foot-8 Pelle took advantage of a mismatch, canning a game-winning 12-footer over the 6-3 Lee with 26 ticks left.

Lee was playing power forward in the place of 6-9 Jeff Graves, who had fouled out, and 6-9 Wayne Simien, who didn’t play because of a dislocated shoulder.

“It was definitely tough to watch that from the bench, especially when their big guys were hurting us,” said Simien, who returned to play 18 minutes Sunday against Iowa State and is expected to play again tonight. “Stephane Pelle had a big game. Sitting on the bench and watching your position … you think, ‘I could have grabbed that rebound. I could have gotten that putback.’

“It’s frustrating being hurt — winning or losing after the game you feel you didn’t have anything to do with the wins or losses. You feel bad either way.”

Colorado’s victory snapped the Buffs’ 27-game losing streak against the Jayhawks, who have won 19 straight over CU at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Buffs are 0-5 on the road and 5-0 at home in Big 12 games.

“The only thing I can come up with is we are not mature enough to go on the road and realize how hard and difficult it is to play and win,” CU coach Ricardo Patton said. “We do not realize how important it is to take care of the basketball and do the little things. Evaluating our roster, we are not mature enough to do that yet.”

CU starts one senior in Pelle, who averages 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds, and juniors Morandais (17.4 ppg) and guard Blair Wilson (13.0 ppg). Harrison, a sophomore, averages 13.3 points and 8.8 boards, and freshman Antoine McGee (3.1 ppg, 3.3 assists) runs the point.

“We are playing with a freshman point guard who is not scoring for us,” Patton said. “If we had a freshman point guard making shots, I think the outcome would be different on the road. I think that is a major, major factor in one of the reasons we have not won on the road.”

McGee has made 12 of 37 shots in 10 Big 12 games.

Williams hopes the Buffs’ road woes continue tonight.

“Everybody feels more comfortable in their own gym which you shoot in all the time, the surroundings, the whole bit,” Williams said. “I think that Colorado the last couple of years has been right on the edge of taking that step of getting into the upper echelon. This year they realize that’s a step they can’t easily take, so they are a little more enthused as players, coaches, the whole bit, and I think what makes the fans get up in there because they are more successful.”
