Top 25 suffers shakeup

Nine ranked squads stunned, including No. 4 Florida by Vols

Saturday wasn’t a good day to be a men’s college basketball team in the Associated Press poll.

All told, nine squads ranked in the top 25 were knocked off — No. 4 Florida, No. 7 Pittsburgh, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 11 Marquette, No. 12 Creighton, No. 13 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Illinois, No. 23 Connecticut and No. 25 St. Joseph’s.

Nineteenth-ranked Mississippi State barely won, surviving a scare from rival Mississippi, 68-64, in overtime.

The highest ranked loser, the fourth-ranked Gators, didn’t have an answer for Tennessee’s Ron Slay, the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference, who had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Volunteers’ 66-59 victory.

Tennessee (15-6, 7-3 SEC) extended its winning streak to six games.

Brandon Crump added a career-high 19 points for the Vols, who ended their five-game losing streak to the Gators and made another push toward returning to the NCAA Tournament.

Florida (20-4, 9-2), which beat Tennessee 77-64 in Gainesville last month, couldn’t sweep the series this year.

“When it’s two minutes left in the game and it’s a close game, it’s time to suck it up,” Crump said. “You can give it all you got because the last two minutes of the game is just two minutes. It’s not like you have to play 20 more minutes after that.”

The Vols beat a top five opponent for the first time since a 78-77 win over then-No. 2 Kentucky in February 1993.

Matt Bonner scored 19 points while David Lee added 14 and Justin Hamilton had 11 for Florida, which had won two since losing at Kentucky after reaching No. 1.

No. 1 Arizona 86, USC 59

Tucson, Ariz. — Channing Frye scored a career-high 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked three shots for Arizona. The Wildcats (20-2, 12-1 Pac-10) reached 20 victories for the 16th year in a row, the longest active streak in the country.
