‘Nightingale’ teaches wisdom, compassion

The Lied Center is partnering with a national arts organization to stage Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Nightingale” for area school children.

The school-only performances will be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lied Center.

In “The Nightingale,” the Emperor of China comes to understand the song of the nightingale: To be truly wise is to be compassionate and free, to discover the world and its joy, and to find one’s own true self. Music, dance and narration drive the educational production.

The show is presented by The Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration on Tour.

The performance will include a teacher workshop featuring theater director and educator Tom Mallan from The Kennedy Center.

The event is made possible by Adventures in Imagination, the business/education partnership between the Lied Center, the Lawrence school district and US Bank.

KU alumna returns for organ concert

Kansas University alumna Susan Dickerson Moeser will play a concert today at Bales Organ Recital Hall.

The 3 p.m. concert is free and open to the public.

Moeser is University Organist and instructor of organ at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received the doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance from Kansas University in 1982.

Her recent CD, titled “Susan Moeser plays Bedient Opus 59,” features the concert she performed at the 1999 Regional American Guild of Organists convention in Omaha, Neb.

Choir alumni invited to return for tribute

Alumni members of the 1956 Lawrence High School A Cappella Choir are asking all former choir members to return for a tribute to former director R. Wayne Nelson.

Nelson conducted choirs at the high school from 1948-1968. He turned 92 in February.

Cathy Crispino, current director of choirs at LHS, said the alumni will be part of her spring concert.
