Chaney has participated in a number of Scouting activities, including ones at Camp Naish and several camping trips to Colorado. He is a member of Order of the Arrow, an honor camping organization.

Chaney, 17, is the son of Richard and Kathy Chaney, Lawrence. His Court of Honor ceremony will incorporate the flag that draped the casket of his grandfather LeRoy Spence. The flag was donated to the American Legion in 1982 after his death.

Venturing Crew 2052, a new all-female unit, attended OKPIK. It is held at the Northern Tier High Adventure Camp on Moose Lake, outside of Ely, Minn., and emphasizes winter survival skills.

While there, the crew members hiked about three miles over two frozen lakes, pulling sleds with their gear. They built snow domes on the lake to sleep in for two nights. They had to dig through 18 to 20 inches of ice for drinking water. Participants also did cross country skiing and a seven-mile dog sled trek.

Crew 2052 was joined by three other Kansas City troops and crews; however, it was the first all-female crew to attend OKPIK this year.

Crew members who attended were Anna Robertson, Clarissa Wagner and Christy Howard. They were joined by Christine Salisbury and Emily Parsons of Crew 2264 from Lee’s Summit, Mo. Adult leaders who attended were Ralena McCurdy, Robin Robertson and Pat Deaver. Mason McCurdy from Troop 52 also attended.
