Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Missionaries will be honored during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Beginning March 2, Sunday school will start at 9:30 a.m. for all ages, nursery through adults. The adult Sunday school class will be taught by the Rev. Marshall Lackrone.

Also starting March 2, Sunday worship will start at 10:30 a.m.

Children’s church is during the morning worship service and is for ages 4 through 12. Nursery will be provided for children up to 3 years old.

Centenary United Methodist Church

Scout Sunday will be held this weekend at Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St.

Morning worship, which begins at 10:50 a.m. Sunday, will be led by Wayne Deaver, Centenary’s coordinator of Scouting ministry. The service will include participants from the three Scouting units led by Centenary members: Girl Scout Troop No. 558, led by Tammy Barta; Cub Scout Pack No. 3051, led by Harold Aiken; and Boy Scout Troop No. 52, led by Wayne Deaver.

Centenary will hold its monthly midweek worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary. This service, led by the Rev. Judy Long O’Neal, will include litanies and prayers for peace.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

The men’s fellowship breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. today at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

The monthly WISH (Worship Involving Severely Handicapped) service will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon today at the church. This is a special service for adults in the community who have physical and mental disabilities.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the sanctuary in memory of Dorothy Bigsby, who was one of the charter members of the Assembly of God in Lawrence.

Starting this weekend, the church will offer two Sunday morning worship services. The first one will start at 8 a.m., followed by the Sunday school hour at 9:30 a.m. and the second service at 10:30 a.m.

The Rev. Aaron Rust, missionary to Namibia, will speak at the 8 a.m. Sunday service. He will give a brief update of his work during the 10:30 a.m. service.

The Refuge Youth Rally Group will be held Wednesday. Pre-rally prayer starts at 6 p.m., and the rally starts at 7 p.m. The Rev. Luke Weese will present the message on “Quit Freakin’ Out.”

First Church of the Nazarene

The community is invited to hear a presentation by Air Force Chaplain Lt. Col. Richard Lawrenz, who has been stationed in Uzbekistan, at 6 p.m. Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road.

Lawrenz has been on furlough and will be shipping out again in March. He will speak about Uzbekistan and his experiences while stationed in that country.

First United Methodist Church

Members of First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., are invited to meet the congregation’s new parish nurse, Jill Ice, and learn about the parish nurse program during an open house from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Participants will be served a healthy snack and pick up a “Vial of Life.”

The United Methodist Women are sponsoring a dinner meeting, “Faith in Action: $$$ and Sense in School Issues,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Randy Weseman, superintendent of Lawrence public schools, will discuss statewide funding for education, federal mandates and the local district budget.

Cost of the meal is $6 per person. Anyone who would like to come hear the program is welcome to arrive at 7:15 p.m.

Plymouth Congregational Church

New members will be joining Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

The discussion of current topics of reform in the Catholic Church will continue Sunday in the adult education class at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

The class meets from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the parish hall.

St. Luke AME Church

In recognition of the founder and first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in America, Richard Allen, the combined choirs of St. Luke AME Church, 900 N.Y., and St. James AME Church, Seventh and Maple streets, will present a musical at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at St. Luke.

The musical will feature spirituals, gospels, contemporary African-American music, African songs, African drumming and instrumentals.

The life of Richard Allen will be narrated by Marcus Murphy Jr. African attire is encouraged.

The community is invited to attend this musical celebration of African-American heritage during Black History Month.

The Rev. Verdell Taylor Jr. is pastor of St. Luke. The Rev. Gregory Gray is pastor of St. James.

St. Luke was placed on the State of Kansas Register of historic places in August 2001.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Third Annual Women’s Retreat, “Nourishing Your Body & Soul,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt will deliver the message, “What in the World am I Doing?” at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. worship services Sunday.

The sermon will issue a challenge to the community to discover the reasons for living a life of purpose.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The youth of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will host a valentine’s dinner and dance at 7 p.m. Saturday at the church.

A three-course meal featuring Chicken Alfredo and a chocolate dessert bar will be served, followed by dancing.

The cost is $12 per person. Reservations may be made at the church office or by calling 843-6166. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Child care for infants through sixth grade is included in the ticket price.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The Rev. Gary Teske, senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., recently completed the Stephen Ministry Leadership Training course in Orlando, Fla.

He joins the leadership team of four other Stephen-trained leaders at Trinity Lutheran — Melissa Boisen, Karen Hunt, Joyce Tate and Ruth Sarna.

Trinity has been a Stephen Ministry congregation since 1998 and has 13 active Stephen ministers helping people who need a friend to be with them in times of turmoil, need or crisis.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

The service will be followed by a fellowship program at 10:30 a.m. called “Past and Present: Celebrating Fellowship and Unitarian Universalism.” Presenters will be Stuart Boley, Tracey Robinson-Harris and Frank Kysela.

Vinland United Methodist Church

A ham-and-bean dinner with cornbread and cherry pie will be served from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Vinland United Methodist Church, 1724 N. 692 Road.

Proceeds will be used to fix up the church kitchen.

Freewill offerings will be collected.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Scott Simpson, representative of the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry, conducted an all-church meeting Feb. 9 for members of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Simpson gave an overview and step-by-step description of plans for calling an installed minister. For the past year, the congregation has been under the direction of the Rev. Jay Gideon, interim pastor.

The Lydia Circle will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, and the Martha Circle will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Both groups will meet at the church.

Bell choir and voice choir will meet at their regular times, 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Scout Sunday will be celebrated Feb. 23, with members of Troop No. 55 participating in the 11 a.m. Sunday service.
