KU Engineering Expo planned for next week

A day of speeches, games and demonstrations is scheduled Feb. 21 for the annual Engineering Expo at Kansas University.

The event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., will draw hundreds of students from across Kansas.

Don Faught, a 1973 KU mechanical engineering graduate, is the keynote speaker for the event. Faught, president of the European and Asia Pacific regions for DuPont Dow Elastomers, will speak at 9:30 a.m. at the Lied Center.

Demonstrations and competitions will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Learned Hall. Demonstrations include rocket designs, a flight simulator, a race-car simulator, a wind tunnel and communication displays.

Crime

Victim of stabbing was intoxicated at death

A 49-year-old man found stabbed to death in a Lawrence apartment earlier this year had a blood-alcohol level of 0.27 — what a coroner described as “acute” intoxication — at the time of his death.

Police found the body of Michael B. Riley on Jan. 4 inside his apartment at 1722 W. 24th St. after receiving a tip.

The official cause of death in Riley’s autopsy, filed earlier this month in Douglas County District Court, is “multiple injuries,” including stab wounds to the chest and neck.

The man who was informally sharing Riley’s apartment, 31-year-old David J. Uptain, is charged with second-degree murder in the case. His trial is scheduled to begin May 19 in Douglas County District Court.
