County approves tree farm permit

A Christmas tree farm will be able to operate at the edge of Lawrence for at least another five years, but rulings about the futures of two other rural business operations will have to wait for at least a few weeks, Douglas County commissioners decided Wednesday.

Commissioners approved a conditional use permit for Strawberry Hill Christmas Tree Farm at 794 U.S. Highway 40, a mile west of the highway’s intersection with the South Lawrence Trafficway.

Commissioners Jere McElhaney and Charles Jones approved the permit and wished owners Eric and Lyn Walther well. Bob Johnson, commission chairman, did not attend Wednesday’s meeting.

“The Walthers are good people, and they’re doing a good job,” McElhaney said.

Commissioners postponed making decisions about two other applications for permits: a storage shed for Creekwood Lawn Co., 1753 N. 700 Road, and a larger storage area for equipment and materials at 1768 E. 1100 Road.

Commissioners said they wanted to gather more information about the requests and hear from the applicants before voting. The decisions are not expected to come for at least another few weeks.
