KU’s spring football practices to begin on March 10

Kansas University announced its schedule for spring football practice Tuesday, including five practices open to the public.

The Jayhawks will open their second spring session with coach Mark Mangino on March 10 and conclude drills with the annual spring game April 12.

The spring game will kick off at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

All practices, with the exception of the spring game, are scheduled to take place on the practice fields behind Anschutz Pavilion.

KU fans can get a first look at two semester transfers — Alfred State receiver Lyonel Anderson, a 6-foot-4, 230-pounder, and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M offensive lineman Joe Vaughn (6-3, 290) — when spring drills open March 10.

The four other dates open to the public and media are March 12 and 28 and April 2 and 12.

Freshman defensive back Kenneth Thompson (5-11, 175) also will be in camp for the first time. The all-state selection from Grand Prairie, Texas, was not academically eligible in time for the 2002 season, but later earned a qualifying score.

Derek Fine (6-4, 220), an all-state tight end from Sallisaw, Okla., also is expected to participate. Fine reported for preseason camp last fall, but had to return to Oklahoma after suffering complications from a summer appendectomy.

Kansas, which finished 2-10 last year, is scheduled to open the 2003 season Aug. 30 with a nonconference home game against Northwestern.
