Finally, the year’s most likely Oscar frontrunner prances into Lawrence. I’m talking about “Chicago,” the staggeringly energetic adaptation of the popular musical. Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere headline this visually dazzling tale of murder, betrayal and media manipulation.
Also opening is the frothy romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” which stars Kate Hudson as a magazine writer whose assignment is to try and dump a new boyfriend. Matthew McConaughey plays the victim of this dubious journalistic scheme.
And it wouldn’t be a weekend at the movies without an unnecessary sequel. Today’s entry is “Shanghai Knights,” the Jackie Chan/Owen Wilson western that hopes to wow viewers with its fancy fight scenes.
Those craving real choreography might want to see “Chicago” instead.
