Sorority reports $61,000 theft

Police investigate embezzlement

Lawrence Police are investigating allegations someone embezzled more than $61,000 from the corporation that maintains the Sigma Kappa sorority house at Kansas University.

The alleged theft happened between November 2000 and November 2002, Lt. David Cobb said. Cobb said police planned to interview a woman who had been keeping the books for the corporation the past two years.

The case involves allegations the woman used the corporation’s money for personal uses, such as phone bills and credit-card bills, Cobb said.

The corporation’s board members, who are responsible for maintaining the house at 1325 West Campus Road, reported the theft Friday. They had little to say about the case Wednesday.

“All we can say at this point is that we have found some discrepancies in the corporation’s finances, which we are investigating,” board treasurer Ruth Rader wrote in an e-mail to the Journal-World. “It is inappropriate to discuss the investigation any further before it is completed. Our priority is to safeguard the women of the chapter, which we are doing.”

Sorority members hadn’t heard anything about the incident Wednesday, and the case hasn’t affected life at the sorority, house director Donna Hodges said.
