Nature center to house two rehabilitated eagles

Two eagles will be making their home at Lawrence Parks and Recreation’s Prairie Park Nature Center.

The center this week received confirmation from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that it had been approved to house a golden eagle and a bald eagle, much like the one at left.

Marty Birrell, nature interpretive supervisor, said the center had been granted permission to permanently house a golden eagle that is now at a wildlife rehabilitation facility in Cody, Wyo. The golden eagle, a male thought to be 10 years old, was rehabilitated from a wing injury suffered when it hit a power line. The eagle is unable to be released because it cannot fly.

The bald eagle was injured by a power line in southern Kansas and also cannot fly. It is about 3 years old.

Both birds are expected to arrive late this month.

Lawrence resident found shot dead in Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo. — A Lawrence, Kan., man was found shot to death Tuesday morning on a Kansas City street.

Kansas City Police identified the man as Antwoine Crockett, 30, a former Kansas City resident who had lived in Lawrence about four months.

About 9:30 a.m., a man walking in the area of 19th Street and Walrond Avenue found Crockett’s body, police said.

Crockett left Lawrence on a bus Monday and arrived at 5:15 p.m. in Kansas City, where he was supposed to board a connecting bus to St. Louis and then go to Milwaukee to meet a friend, police said.

Police said they didn’t know why Crockett was in the area where his body was found and had few clues about his death.

Decision again delayed on future of Folks Road

Lawrence city commissioners reiterated Wednesday their plan not to decide the future of Folks Road until development plans there are completed.

Commissioners were given two options Wednesday to finance extension of the road south from Sixth Street. But they said they wouldn’t make a decision until a mixed-use residential development was approved for the southwest corner of Sixth and Folks.

After an earlier attempt failed, the developer is back on schedule to receive approval this month from the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission.

“We’re just waiting for the City Commission to decide which option they opt for,” said developer Doug Compton of First Management Inc. “After nearly a year and a half of planning and design work, it’s time to pick an option and move forward.”
