One inch of snow in Monday’s forecast

Monday’s weather will bring a smorgasborg of precipitation — mist, drizzle, sleet and snow, according to a local weather forecaster.

“It’s going to mist or drizzle this morning, then we’ll see sleet by lunch and snow in the afternoon and evening for dinner,” Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist, said Monday morning.

The snow coming to Lawrence will end between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday, Makens said.

“And we’ll be left with an inch or so on the ground,” he said. “The winds will be strong this afternoon and evening, so there will be blowing and a little bit of drifting overnight.”

Three to four inches of snow is expected in extreme northeast Kansas, including Atchison County, and much of northern Missouri, with blowing and drifting snow Monday afternoon and evening. That area is under a winter weather advisory, but Lawrence is not, he said.

“What’s interesting is this storm is giving snow to us but rain for the (Columbia shuttle) recovery efforts in eastern Texas and western Louisiana,” he said.

In Lawrence, temperatures have been falling throughout the early morning and should drop to the low 30s by Monday afternoon and get down to 17 by early Tuesday morning, he said.

The precipitation will end Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies returning. But the temperature will stay cool, reaching a high of 33, Makens said. Tuesday night’s temperature will fall to about 16.

Wednesday’s skies will be partly cloudy, with a high of 33 and light snow starting Wednesday night.

Snow will continue throughout Thursday, with a high of 31, Makens said. He said it was still too early to predict how much snow the second storm system of the week will bring.

“Unlike last week, where it was so warm and in the weekend we were in the 60s, old man winter has returned for this week,” Makens said.
