Lions triumph at Atchison

? Aaron Madill kept winning, and Lawrence High did, too, earning a first-place finish Saturday at the Atchison Tournament. The Lions finished with a whopping 205 points, blowing away second-place Wamego (142).

Madill, a senior, improved to 31-0, but he wasn’t the only Lion champion. Chris Cates (103), Pharouk Hussein (125), Chris Hultine (152), Clayton Kellerman (215) and Kenny Poeverlein (275) each finished in first place, which pleased Lawrence coach Mark Dulgarian.

“It was a good tournament to be in to boost some confidence,” Dulgarian said.

Dulgarian cited Jelil Hussein’s third-place finish against tough competition — the senior wrestled the top seed at 145 and lost by decision, 10-9.

Freshman Chris Ermey’s second-place finish at 119 was refreshing, too, Dulgarian said.

The Lions will head to the Sunflower League meet Feb. 15 in Leavenworth.

“I don’t think it will be a question of what team can win because conference will be won by the team that can get kids through the back door,” he said. “That might be the team that can pull it out.”
