At least two injured in one-vehicle accident

Two children and possibly another person suffered injuries Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on northbound Douglas County Road 1061, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said.

The wreck happened about 4:05 p.m. when the vehicle carrying four Clearview City residents left the road, hit a culvert and overturned, Tate said.

One child was flown by helicopter to a Kansas City-area hospital. Another child and an adult with possible injuries were taken to a hospital.

The driver wasn’t injured, Tate said.

The victims’ names weren’t available Saturday night.

Soldiers from Manhattan called to active duty

Wichita — Ten U.S. Army Reserve soldiers from the Manhattan-based 450th Transportation Battalion have been ordered to active duty for deployment overseas.

Details about when the soldiers will leave and where they will be sent were not released. A deployment ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at the Army Reserve Center in Manhattan.

The mobilization was announced Friday by the Wichita-based Army Reserve 89th Regional Support Command.

Part of K-7 designated as a scenic byway

Topeka — The Kansas Department of Transportation designated Kansas Highway 7 from Leavenworth to the Kansas/

Nebraska border as the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway. It is the fifth scenic byway the department has designated this year.

The byway begins at the intersection of K-7 and Kansas Highway 92 in Leavenworth and extends 63 miles north through the glacial hills of Atchison, Doniphan and Leavenworth counties.

Communities along the byway hope to share the area’s heritage with visitors through interpretive signs and tours of unique barns in the area.

Event to benefit Planned Parenthood

Chocolate, wine, jazz and a silent auction will help Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri raise money next month.

The eighth annual Chocolate for Choice will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second St. Entertainment will be provided by the Chuck Berg Trio.

Tickets are $25 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Lawrence clinic of Planned Parenthood, which provides annual exams, contraception, pregnancy testing, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV counseling and cancer screening.

Pie sale, quilt show to benefit ICAN

Interfaith Caring Neighbors will have its sixth annual Pie Sale and Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Admittance to the show is free. There will be more than 60 quilts on display, and participants can enjoy homemade pie, which will be sold by the slice or pan.

Free quilt lectures will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sammi Messick, president of Kaw Valley Quilters Guild, and Barbara Brackman, a quilt historian, will present the lectures.

All proceeds will go toward the operation of ICAN, a local, nonprofit volunteer program that provides informal support service for the elderly so that they may remain independent.

ICAN services are provided free of charge by volunteers throughout the community.

KU Alumni Association to honor couple

A couple from Fort Scott will be honored for their service to Kansas University during an event Feb. 11.

Charles and Martha Jane Gentry, both KU graduates, will receive the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award from the KU Alumni Association for their support of the Kansas Honors Program, which recognizes the top 10 percent of Kansas high school seniors.

The presentation will occur at a Honors Program dinner at Iola High School, where 42 high school seniors from Allen, Bourbon and Woodson counties will be honored.

Charles Gentry also serves on the board of directors for the KU School of Allied Health and Martha Jane serves on the Greater University Fund board.

The award, established in 1986, is named for Clodfelter, a KU alumna and longtime employee at the Alumni Association.
