Area Basketball Roundup: Wilson’s 38 power Kaws past Dragons

? Shannon Wilson owns Perry-Lecompton High’s all-time girls’ basketball scoring record, and Saturday’s game showed why.

The senior scored an incredible 38 points in the Kaws’ 58-53 victory against Valley Falls in the fifth-place game of the Jefferson North Invitational. At halftime, Wilson had 21 points — the Dragons had 20.

“She had one of those games,” P-L coach Kevin Bost said. “And it was a quiet 21. It wasn’t anything forced. Girls were feeding her the ball, and she was hitting her shots.”

A late Valley Falls rally almost rendered Wilson’s performance null, but the Kaws (4-9) staved off the fourth-quarter flurry and survived.

“We almost gave it away in the fourth,” Bost said. “But we hit some key free throws and held on. We’re learning how to win close games down the end.”

The Kaws will play host to Lansing on Tuesday.

Pembroke Hill boys 72, Baldwin 70, OT

Baldwin — Baldwin High’s boys basketball team rallied to force overtime Saturday against Kansas City (Mo.) Pembroke Hill, but couldn’t prevail.

“We played our guts out today,” said BHS coach Jeff Haas, who said he was emotionally drained after the game. “I’m proud of our team.”

Pembroke had a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs’ frantic rally tied the game. Baldwin had a chance to win in regulation, but the Bulldogs’ last-second shot — Haas said it was a “decent” look — didn’t go in.

Trailing by two points late in overtime, BHS junior Andy Hannon, who scored a game-high 25 points, kicked the ball out to freshman Jeremy Wright.

Wright put up a semi-guarded three-pointer with a couple of seconds left, but …

“It just didn’t fall,” Haas said.

Senior Joe Gipp added 17 points and senior Brian Lauridsen had 13 for the Bulldogs (4-12), who will play host to Prairie View on Friday.
