Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Live gospel music will be presented by White Harvest at 10 a.m. Feb. 9 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

The event is free and open to the community.

Central United Methodist Church

Frankie Valens, the singer who made popular songs such as “This Magic Moment,” “Smoke Gets in My Eyes” and “Diana” will perform at a banquet and concert Feb. 14 at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

A catered “Valens-tine Sweetheart Dinner” will be held at 6 p.m. Tickets to the reserved-seating dinner are $10 per person.

A free community concert with Valens and his wife, Phyllis, a pianist, will start at 7:30 p.m. A freewill offering will be received. No tickets are required to this event, but there is only room for 250 to 300 people.

Faith Christian Fellowship

Faith Christian Fellowship, a new church fellowship in Lawrence, meets at 3 p.m. Sundays at the Days Inn, 2309 Iowa.

It has been started as an independent, full-Gospel fellowship by a church-planting team from Ottawa.

The team includes a former church pastor from Paola, a worship leader and several musicians and a children’s ministry leader.

The purpose of the fellowship is not to draw people in from other churches, but to attract those in the Lawrence area who do not already have a church home.

People who are seeking a church that presents a clear and concise, full-Gospel message are invited to attend the fellowship.

First Baptist Church

A celebration of the sacred music of Douglas County’s churches will be presented as Music Fest at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Music Fest, held annually since 2001, is sponsored by the Covenant Churches of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. Eight Lawrence churches will participate in this year’s event, and the Lawrence Men’s Choral will perform.

Music director for the event is Geoffrey Wilcken, a Lawrence composer and music director at Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets.

Each church participating in Music Fest will present a choral, small group or instrumental selection. A massed choir composed of the choirs of all the churches will premier a piece composed by Wilcken for the occasion.

A reception for the audience and choirs will follow the event.

There is no admission fee to attend. A freewill offering will be collected for the ministry of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.

First Church of the Nazarene

Air Force Chaplain Lt. Col. Richard Lawrence, who was scheduled to speak at Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road, had to cancel his appearance due to unexpected surgery.

The community is invited to attend a parenting seminar, “Helping Kids to Become Genuine Disciples,” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8. The Rev. Alan Thompson is the speaker.

Child care will be provided.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with doughnuts and coffee served. Materials and the sessions cost $5 per person.

First United Methodist Church

A blood drive sponsored by the Community Blood Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

All donors will need to have identification. A free cholesterol test will be provided.

A “Souper Lunch” will be hosted by the church’s senior high mission team from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The lunch will feature a variety of soups, as well as homemade cinnamon rolls.

A freewill offering will be collected to help the youth mission team raise money for its annual trip to the Cumberland mountain region in Tennessee.

Heartland Community Church

The Heartland Medical Clinic, 619 Vt., which provides free, family-practice health care to the uninsured, has received a $10,000 grant from the Douglas County Community Foundation to fund half the salary of a parish nurse.

Pat Mayo, a registered nurse, will assume the position of parish nurse.

Mayo, along with four volunteer physicians, several volunteer nurses and many administrative volunteers, serve the public from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday.

No appointment is necessary, and there is no charge for care.

Heartland Community Church provides free rent and utilities to the clinic. Individuals and area churches contribute funds to pay ongoing expenses.

The clinic is an outreach ministry of Heartland Community Church.

Martha and Mary’s Way

A “Questions of Faith” video series, sponsored by Martha and Mary’s Way, will begin Thursday and continue each Thursday in February. Sessions will meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The series schedule:

l Feb. 6 — “Who is Jesus?”

l Feb. 13 — “Who’s Got the Truth?”

l Feb. 20 — “What’s the Use of the Bible?”

l Feb. 27 — “What Happens after Death?”

The videos include responses to these questions from a number of contemporary theologians. Sister Irene McGrath will lead discussions after each video.

Martha and Mary’s Way is an ecumenical ministry of women to women.

MCH Christian Fellowship

Laraine Day-Geathers, a teacher and pastor’s wife, will be the special guest speaker at 10:30 a.m. Sunday for 2003 Women’s Day at MCH Christian Fellowship, 2518 Ridge Court, Room D.

Day-Geathers, who is from Jesus is the Rock Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo., will speak on “Love as a Foundation.”

Oread Friends Meeting

A book discussion group on Stephen Levine’s “One Year to Live” will meet at 2 p.m. Sundays starting Feb. 9 at the Meeting House, 1146 Ore.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Interfaith Caring Neighbors will hold its sixth annual Pie Sale and Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Mayflower Room of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

More than 60 quilts will be displayed and guests can enjoy a piece of homemade pie, which will be sold by the slice and by the pan.

There will be free quilt lectures at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Admittance to the show is free. All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting ICAN, a local, nonprofit volunteer program that provides informal support services for the elderly.

Also at Plymouth, the children of the church will gather at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the Mayflower Room for an educational re-enactment of the Last Supper, with adults portraying Jesus and the Twelve Disciples.

Plymouth welcomes Kay Cerny as the new pastor’s associate for membership. Kay replaces Nancy Lott, who has taken a position at Kansas University.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

St. John Parish will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemass Day, with blessing of candles for use in homes during all weekend liturgies.

The blessing of throats will take place after all liturgies and during the 7:30 a.m. Monday liturgy on the Feast of St. Blaise.

The topic this week for the adult religious education class is Vatican II. The class meets from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the parish hall of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The fifth- and sixth-grade community service group of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., will visit Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s pediatric unit Sunday to give patients gifts that were collected during last week’s “Celebrating as Healers” special service.

A reception for the Rev. Peter Casparian, former chaplain at Canterbury House, 1116 La., will follow the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

The theme of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday spiritual service at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will be “The Process of Healing Through a Unitarian Universalist Lens.”

The fellowship program at 10:30 a.m. will feature playwright John Grombeck-Tedesco speaking on “In Honor of Kansas Day: The Early Days of Lawrence.”

Unity Church of Lawrence

“A Life of Balance: Does It Always Begin with Me?” will be the sermon topic at the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane.

A half-hour meditation takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

The church features the Unity Art Gallery of Lawrence, where a photography show is on display until March 1.

Gallery hours are 9:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The gallery also is open from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“Small Congregations: New Hope, New Directions” will be the theme of the 2003 Small Church Celebration of the Presbytery of northern Kansas, sponsored by West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The meeting, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, will feature the Rev. Betty Meadows, executive of the Mid-Kentucky Presbytery. Lunch will be served.

The “Souper Bowl Sunday” fund-raiser last week yielded $127.50 and 129 food items, which were donated to a local charity.
