Turnbaugh

Hank and Pat Turnbaugh, Eudora, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Emerson Park Christian Church in Kansas City, Kan.

Hank Turnbaugh and Pat Suggs were married Jan. 31, 1953.

The Turnbaughs are longtime members of the Emerson Park Christian Church and have been active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the International Order of Job’s Daughters.

Pat has worked many years for National Seminars Group.

Hank served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a professional baseball player in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He served on the Turner school board for eight years and is a former Kansas state representative. He has been associated with Farmers Insurance Group for the past 37 years. Hank is a member of the Ben Hur Masonic Lodge No. 322, where he serves as secretary. He is a past president of the Turner Lions Club.

The couple’s children are Lynette McFarland, Kansas City, Kan., and Keith and Shari Turnbaugh, Eudora. They also have seven grandsons.

Dickinson

William and Betty Dickinson, Lawrence, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today.

Bill Dickinson and Betty Ann Landree were married Feb. 1, 1953, at Danforth Chapel on Kansas University’s campus, where they were both students.

After graduating from KU, Bill served in the Army’s Counterintelligence Corps and then began a journalism career that included stints with United Press in Kansas City, Mo., Santa Fe, N.M., and Washington, D.C. He was editor of Editorial Research Reports, Congressional Quarterly Inc. and became editorial director/general manager of the newly formed Washington Post Writers Group in 1973. The Dickinsons moved to Lawrence in 1991. Bill was resident professional at KU’s School of Journalism from 1993 to 1998 before accepting the Manship chair in the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. He plans to retire from LSU after this semester.

Betty, also a KU graduate, worked as a medical technologist and quality control officer with Hazleton Laboratories in Vienna, Va. After moving to Lawrence, she worked part time for three years at KU’s Watkins Student Health Center.

A reception is planned later this year when Bill returns from Baton Rouge.

The couple’s children are Will Dickinson, Olathe, and David Dickinson, Santa Barbara, Calif. They also have four grandchildren.

Hicks

Jo Anne and Walter J. Hicks, Lawrence, plan to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception this spring.

The couple were married Jan. 25, 1953, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kan. They have lived in Lawrence since 1957.

Walter is a graduate of the Kansas University School of Architecture. While at KU, he received a freshman letter in basketball and lettered three years in baseball. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he served two years in the military. Walter practiced architecture for 39 years, including 26 in Lawrence through his firm Hicks-Messick and Associates. He retired from the firm in 1994.

For 26 years, Walter served as treasurer of the PiKA Alumni Assn. He is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as council president and property committee chairman. He joined the Lawrence Sertoma Club in 1967. He has served as club president twice and in 1996 was selected Sertoman of the Year.

Jo Anne is a graduate of Ottawa University. Since moving to Lawrence, she has been active in early childhood education and in the areas of music performance, music composition and program development. She is a published author and the composer within the resource guide, “Resources for Creative Teaching in Early Childhood Education.” Last fall, she received a citation from the Kansas Federation of Music Clubs for 25 years of outstanding musical contributions to the community. Jo Anne is an active participant in P.E.O. Chapter FZ, Round Table Book Club, Lawrence Music Club and Trinity Lutheran Church.

The couple’s children are Jan O’Neill, Edmond, Okla.; Jeffrey Hicks, Coppell, Texas; James Hicks, Lawrence; and Jo Ellen Kasson, Lawrence. They have nine grandchildren.

Penny

Mary Lou and Junius Penny, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an informal open house from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at their home, 2425 Orchard Lane. Friends and family are invited. The couple also marked the occasion with a formal family dinner Jan. 11 at the Eldridge Hotel.

Mary Lou Nelson and Junius Myrl Penny were married Feb. 6, 1943, in Hutchinson. Junius is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mryl Penny, Lawrence. Mary Lou is the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. W.O. Nelson, Lawrence.

Mary Lou and Junius attended Kansas University. Junius operated Penny’s Ready Mix Concrete in Emporia and expanded it to other cities in Kansas. After retirement, he was elected city commissioner and served as mayor in Emporia, where the couple spent most of their lives.

The couple’s children are David Penny, Lawrence; Anne Urish, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Susan Schmidt, Columbia, Mo.; Bill Penny, Lawrence; and Debby Hydeman, Lenexa. They have 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dalsing

Clarence and Jean Dalsing, Kingman, Ariz., will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with family and friends in Pahrump, Nev.

The couple were married Feb. 2, 1963, in Miami, Okla. Clarence grew up in Lawrence and is retired from TWA. Jean is a retired homemaker.

The couple’s children are Donna Bryan, Gardner; Wilma Moore, Las Vegas; Kathy Stringham, North Pole, Alaska; Susan Rader, Pahrump, Nev.; and Debra Trasatti, Pahrump, Nev. They also have 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
