Children have fancy tea at annual library event

The Lawrence Public Library invited children to put on something fancy and come for tea Tuesday.

Children ages 5-12, served by a court jester and princesses, attended the annual events dressed up in their finest clothes and hats — and a few wore crowns.

City government

Commission approves N. Lawrence flood study

The Lawrence City Commission Tuesday morning approved a $282,000 study of North Lawrence, to determine which areas are most prone to flooding, why and what to do about it.

The action came during a brief year-end wrapup session.

The commission returns to its regular meeting schedule at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

Legislative delegation to hear public concerns

Members of the public can share their concerns with members of the Douglas County legislative delegation during an upcoming meeting.

Legislators will be available from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the curriculum conference room at the Lawrence school district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.

The 2004 legislative session convenes Jan. 12 in Topeka.

The Douglas County delegation includes three senators and seven representatives whose districts are within or include parts of Douglas County.

Sherman County

Sheriff’s officers, KBI investigate fatal shooting

A woman was killed Sunday in an apparent accidental shooting outside her home south of Brewster, Sherman County Sheriff Doug Whitson said.

Kerrie Bevington, 27, was shot as she sat in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck. The sheriff said the victim’s husband, Lanny Bevington, 33, reported that he was retrieving a shotgun from the passenger side of the pickup when it discharged accidentally, striking his wife. She was dead at the scene.

The body was taken to Topeka for an autopsy. The sheriff said his office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were investigating.

Recreation

New Year’s Day walk to begin at hospital

The Free State Walkers will stage their fifth annual New Year’s Day 10-kilometer walk Thursday.

The walk, as are two or three others the noncompetitive walking club conduct each year, is co-sponsored by Lawrence Parks and Recreation and is sanctioned for credits by the American Volkssports Assn.

The start and finish point for the walk is the Maine Street entrance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Walkers may start anytime between 10 a.m. and noon.
