Walter E. Bussert

Services for the Rev. Walter E. Bussert, 93, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lawrence. Burial will be Tuesday at Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park, Ill.

The Rev. Bussert died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in Lawrence.

He was born Jan. 6, 1910, in Melrose Park, Ill., the son of William and Elise (Classen) Bussert. He graduated from Concordia Seminar, St. Louis, in 1934.

The Rev. Bussert served churches in Hannibal, Mo., Davenport, Iowa, and Harvel, Ill., in addition to being a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, Ill., and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Champaign, Ill. Most recently, he was the organist and choir director at Redeemer Lutheran Church.

He married Luella Struve on Nov. 10, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa. She died June 16, 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Gibbs, Lawrence, and Cherie Bussert, Boise, Idaho; two sons, Joel, New York, and Loren, Vienna, Va.; a brother, Paul, Spencer, Iowa; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
