Second baseman Reese signs with Red Sox

Boston --The Boston Red Sox agreed Tuesday to a $1 million, one-year contract with free agent second baseman Pokey Reese. Reese, who spent the last two seasons with Pittsburgh, got a $200,000 signing bonus and an $800,000 salary for 2004. The two-time Gold Glove winner also can earn $600,000 in performance bonuses.

Reese was sidelined by a torn thumb ligament last season and hit .215 in 37 games, but had at least 421 at-bats in each of his previous four seasons.

Infielder Walker agrees on contract with Cubs

Chicago -- The Chicago Cubs added a left-handed hitter Tuesday, agreeing to a $1.75 million, one-year contract with free-agent infielder Todd Walker.

Walker, 30, played second base for the Boston Red Sox last year, hitting .283 in 144 games. He said he was not going to try to replace Cubs second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, who agreed to a one-year deal Dec. 7 that guarantees him $2.75 million.

"I passed up a few starting jobs to put myself in this position," Walker said.
