6News and NORAD tracking Santa’s progress

A local meteorologists says Santa and his reindeer are expected to arrive in the Kansas City and Topeka area sometime after 10 tonight.

“I talked to the meteorologists in the Kansas City area and we all think he’ll be in the Independence,Mo., area sometime after 10,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “They’re saying 10:45 or 11, he’ll be passing through here.”

Sayers said the 6News weather team has been getting information from NORAD’s Santa tracking radar to keep tabs on his Christmas Eve flight around the globe.

NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command), has a crew assigned each Christmas Eve to its Santa Tracker Radar.

By late afternoon, Lawrence time, the radar showed the jolly old elf had already been to Australia, southeast Asia, Asia and Africa . By about 4 p.m., the radar showed Santa and his reindeer were flying on a northerly heading over Italy by about 4 p.m.
