West Lafayette, Ind. ? Bryan Hopkins had been hounded all day by Purdue’s physical defense.

He scored just two points through the first 39 minutes of Sunday’s game, but it didn’t matter.

Hopkins scored on a driving layup with 24 seconds left to lift Southern Methodist to a 60-59 stunner of No. 17 Purdue in the championship game of the Boilermaker Invitational.

“To win like this is tremendous for our guys,” SMU coach Mike Dement said. “It’s rare to win one of these.”

Purdue’s Kenneth Lowe had two chances to win the game, but Justin Isham rebounded his miss on the following possession and then Lowe missed a coast-to-coast drive as time ran out.

“I tried my best to get to the basket, but I got cut off so I just tried to pull up and make the shot,” Lowe said.

The Boilermakers (8-2) lost their tournament’s championship game for just the second time in the event’s 13-year history. The other time was Dec. 7, 1991, against Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“We did a poor job executing, we did a poor job competing,” Purdue coach Gene Keady said.

The Mustangs (5-3) frustrated Purdue for much of the game by collapsing its defense into the lane and daring the Boilermakers to shoot from the outside.

No. 5 Georgia Tech 79,

St. John’s 66

Atlanta — B.J. Elder scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half, and Georgia Tech beat St. John’s, spoiling the debut of interim coach Kevin Clark. Mike Jarvis was fired Friday, only six games into his sixth season. St. John’s (2-5) lost four of its first five games, which hadn’t happened since 1922-23. The Yellow Jackets (10-0) continued their best start since 1985-86, the last season they were ranked in the top five.

No. 10 Missouri 106,

N.C.-Greensboro 98

Columbia, Mo. — Jason Conley, a transfer playing in his first game for Missouri, and Arthur Johnson each scored 19 points to lead the Tigers.

Rickey Paulding hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to ignite an 11-0 run that gave Missouri (4-1) a 92-76 lead with under seven minutes to play.

Jay Joseph and Ronnie Burrell each had 22 points for the Spartans (4-5).

Conley, a junior who led the nation in scoring as a freshman at VMI, had to sit out until Missouri’s semester break after transferring at the end of the first semester last year.

Texas A&M 103,

Grambling St. 101, 2 OT

College Station, Texas — Antoine Wright scored a career-high 32 points to lead Texas A&M. The biggest of Wright’s shots didn’t even go in the basket. With just six seconds left and Grambling (2-7) up 101-100, the Tigers were called for goaltending and a foul against the sophomore forward. Wright drained the ensuing free throw for a three-point play and sealed A&M’s overtime win. Texas A&M (5-3) continued to struggle defensively, giving up 56 percent shooting to the Tigers. But A&M’s offense answered the call, getting career performances from Wright and Acie Law.

Laie, Hawaii — Brett Lilly scored 19 points as San Jose State beat Baylor in the round-robin Surf N’ Slam-Hawaii Tournament. Late Saturday box score on page 8C.
