Athletes of the week

Brendan Halpin

Lawrence High

Class: Sophomore

Sport: Wrestling

The week: Halpin was the lone city wrestler to take first place at the 21-team Eudora Tournament of Champions last weekend. Halpin won the 140-pound weight class after beating Tonganoxie’s Chad Starcher, 5-3 in the championship match. The Lawrence High wrestling team took ninth place. As a freshman, Halpin was a state qualifier, earning a preseason No. 5 state ranking by the Kansas Wrestling Coach’s Assn.

Isaac Gardner

McLouth

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

The week: Gardner has quickly established himself as one of the top scoring threats in the area. In weekend action at the Delaware Valley League Tournament in Atchison, Gardner averaged 27.5 points in McLouth’s two weekend victories. Tuesday, Gardner did even better, scoring 32 points — four more than the entire Seabury Academy squad — in a 59-28 Bulldog victory over the Seahawks.

Comment: “We knew he was going to be our big scorer,” McLouth coach Chad Brown said, “and he’s really picked up some buckets when we’ve needed them.”
