Another accident strikes U.S. 24-59

No one injured as trailer overturns

A twisting highway north of Lawrence that already has been the scene of two fatal accidents in two months as well as other injury accidents, was the site Tuesday of yet another spectacular wreck.

This time no one was hurt.

“I just don’t know what to say about that situation,” Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper John Burns said, of the recent accidents. “We have a lot of roadways without full shoulders.”

About 4:30 p.m. Tuesday a westbound semitrailer went out of control and overturned on U.S. Highway 24-59 about a half-mile west of Midland Junction.

Tires on the right side of the 18-wheel rig went off the road, causing the trailer to overturn into a field, Burns said. The cab remained upright, and the driver was not injured.

The accident occurred on a straight-away, unlike the injury accidents that have occurred since November.

Burns noted that the highway does have a shoulder, though in places it is only a half-shoulder, meaning three feet of asphalt, then gravel.

The Highway Patrol runs radar patrols frequently on the highway, and several citations have been written, Burns said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers have been patrolling the highway more closely, along with U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence, as manpower allows, Lt. Ken Massey said.

In the last two weeks of November, two people were killed in separate crashes along the highway east of Midland Junction. Two others were injured in a third collision.

“It just seems like it goes in spurts,” Burns said. “We have accidents, and then it goes dry for a while.”
