Maxine E. Chapman

Services for Maxine E. Chapman, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

Mrs. Chapman died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

She was born July 22, 1922, in Ottawa, the daughter of Lawrence Howard and Sarah Berneice (Graves) Day. She attended Ottawa schools and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1940. She lived in Ottawa until she moved to Lawrence in November 1992.

Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker. She was a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward in Ottawa in the early 1940s, and she worked as a bookkeeper and treasurer for the family business, Chapman Pest Control, for 37 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Ottawa, His Pasture Home Church Group and 700 Club, for which she was a telephone counselor. She was a former member of North Baptist Church of Ottawa, Extension Homemaker Unit, PTA, Women’s Aglow and Christian Women’s Club. She also had attended Cherry Street Wesleyan Church.

She married Everett L. Chapman on June 3, 1944, in Ottawa. He died March 24, 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Chapman and Leslie Dean Chapman, both of Lawrence, and Wayne Chapman, Bedford, Texas; a sister, Beverly Priest, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Larry M. Day; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, where family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Hospice or Trinity United Methodist Church, sent in care of the mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa 66067.
