The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met Nov. 11 in Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Myrna Hartford reported that some teachers and children have expressed interest in the project “Character Counts” for fourth-grade students. Interested parties should contact Hartford at 841-0901.

Susan Krumm announced that “Path” will run from Feb. 18 to April 16. If interested, call 843-7058.

The next Red Cross blood drive will be Jan. 19 at First Christian Church. Willmyra and Stull FCE units each will furnish five dozen cookies for the drive.

The programs for 2004 were announced. They are:

  • Jan. 16 — “Weigh to Diet” by Susan Krumm.
  • Feb. 27 — “What Do Corn and Carpet Have In Common?” by Trudy Rice.
  • March 19 — “Container Gardening” by Bruce Chaldny.
  • April 16 — “Antimicrobial Resistance and the Food Supply” by Dr. Karen Pesaresi Penner.
  • May 7 — “Celebrating Local Foods” by Nancy O’Conner.
  • June 11 — “Eating Well But Cooking Less” by Lisa Martin.
  • Sept. 1 — “Getting Organized” by Laurie Chandler.
  • Sept. 24 — “Where in the World is Tasmania?” by Trevor Sorensen.
  • Oct. 15 — “Breathing Easy: Controlling Asthma Triggers” by Dr. Ronald Weiner.
  • Nov. 5 — “Crafters’ Delight in T-Shirts” by Linda Davis.

The following check-out packets may be picked up and used for programming: “Don’t Do It! Delegate,” “Prepare for a Natural Disaster,” “Grassroots Politics,” “Our Neighbors Food: Sitting at the Table.”

The next FCE Council meeting will be Jan. 13.
