Appeal made for witnesses to fatal beating

? Ellis County and state prosecutors issued a public appeal Friday for anyone who might have information about a Nov. 13 beating that led to the death of a Fort Hays State University student.

Investigators are trying to find witnesses to the death of 18-year-old freshman Clint Johnson, a business major from Healy who was beaten in a fight at an apartment complex north of the campus. Johnson died two days later at a Wichita hospital.

Four students from the university, including three members of the football team, have been charged with second-degree murder in the case.

“This type of investigation requires the assistance of all the citizens of Ellis County and all Fort Hays State University students, faculty and staff,” said Assistant Atty. Gen. Stephen Maxwell, who will prosecute the case.

“The police and prosecutors depend upon the cooperation and assistance of witnesses to the events in order to uncover the truth and secure justice for the victim and his family,” he said

Charges were filed Dec. 1 against the three football players — Bradley Deary, a 21-year-old junior from Smithville, Texas; Luis Llamas, 23, a senior from San Diego; and Christopher Ross, 19, a freshman from Wylie, Texas.

In addition, Jaime Lopez III, 23, a senior from Chula Vista, Calif., also was charged.
