Lawrence builders mark monthly record

Construction total for 2003 tops 2002

Boosted by a northwest Lawrence residential development, the city issued permits for construction valued at $29.3 million during November. It was the highest total recorded in November, and the second-highest monthly total of 2003.

November’s totals boosted the value of construction so far this year to $144.19 million, topping the $141.6 million total for all of 2002.

More than half this November’s total was 87 duplexes to be built at Hutton Farms, which will be north of Peterson Road and west of Kasold Drive. Their valuation was $14.75 million.

Hutton Farms, being developed by Thomas S. Fritzel’s DFC Construction Co., will include duplexes, four-plexes and single-family homes on about 35 acres.

Also in November, DFC received a permit for a commercial structure valued at $170,498, permits for six four-plex structures valued at $1.56 million, and 14 single-family homes valued at $1.57 million, all at Hutton Farms.

In total, the city issued 26 permits for single-family homes during November, with a combined valuation of $3.7 million. That was the highest November single-family total since 1999.

There also were 10 apartment permits issued last month, for a total of 388 dwelling units — a record number of units permitted in any single month. The 10 permits had a total valuation of $7.36 million.

Nine of those, with a value of $4.36 million, were issued to Highland Construction Inc. for apartments at 1501 George Williams Way. One, valued at $3 million, was issued to R.L. Fauss Builders Inc.
